Located on Moore Street in Mount Airy, this historic Victorian/Italianate house was constructed in 1860 and is the earliest known structure remaining in town. Located in Mt. Airy, the Gertrude Smith House was built in 1903 by the Jefferson Davis Smith Family and is on the National Register of Historic Homes. The house is operated by the Gilmer-Smith Foundation, which was established by the will of Gertrude Smith and remains as it was to serve as a living museum reflective of the early 1900’s lifestyle. Open house is held throughout the year and Christmas events are held at the Gertrude Smith House.

This historic trail traces the route of a patriot militia known as the “Overmountain Men” leading to the battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina, during the Revolutionary War. A trailhead is located in downtown Elkin. 111 North Front Street.
Laurel Hill is the birthplace of this Confederate General and is located in Ararat, Virginia, just north of Mount Airy. It features hiking trails that included part of the old Mount Airy & Eastern Railroad and plaques identifying where the birthplace stood and Native American sites were once located; a Civil War Encampment is held each year.

Andy Griffith attended elementary school here and performed on stage here during the 1930s and 1940s. The Surry Arts Council now operates the building with year-round classes, theatre productions, art camps, and live music concerts. The museum is adjacent to the playhouse along with the TV Land landmark statue of Andy and Opie.

The theater was built in 1938 by Earl Q. Benbow and Percy A. Boone who also owned the Grand Theater across the street. The cinema gained considerable national attention when it was selected to present the premiere of Shirley Temple’s film “Just Around the Corner” in 1938. On March 22, 1940, the cinema hosted one of the southern premieres of “Gone With The Wind.” In 1958, the premiere of “A Face in the Crowd,” Andy Griffith’s first movie, was featured at the Earle.
The theater closed its doors in 1985 and was donated by Carmike to the Surry Arts Council in 1990. After considerable renovations, the Arts Council began showing movies again in 1994.
